Overcoming the Scarcity of Local Stories

I’ve just finished helping one of my kids with their reading assignment. The story they had to read was about an incident that happened in the thick of winter with everything covered in snow. Fortunately for them the idea of snow is not foreign but I would not be surprised if majority of their class find it abstract.

This got me thinking: are there any compilations of introductory reading material that are localised and authentically represent Kenya or some familiar African culture? I recall that my high school invested steeply in the Pacesetter Series of books, which had a deep impression on me.

How do you ensure that your children are localised in the literacy skills? Do you know of any good resources that schools could lean into?
