AI has shifted goal-posts: it is now easier than ever to extract or generate intelligent information using computers. I never ever thought this was going to happen in my lifetime.
However, to fully take advantage of this groundbreaking technology assumes that everyone has good literacy skills. Literacy skills are not just about being able to read but being able to engage deeply with textual content at scale. Many degree programmes in advanced countries have extremely high expectations of students with them expected to read through a handful of books per week! Therefore, without strong literacy skills, AI will not impact society as expected and countries for whom literacy skills lag behind will not enjoy the benefits of using these transformative technologies.
Do you children’s schools invest appropriate time and effort into developing literacy skills? How do they fare with regard to the reading milestones? Does your child love to read?
