Learning without fees

Earlier this year, a number of headteachers of boarding schools were ‘forced’ by circumstances to send kids home. Obviously this is disruptive to everyone and appears to be headteachers’ last resort to get parents to remit required school fees.

My high school had a work-study programme whereby needy students would be ‘employed’ by the school to carry out chores freeing up the schools finances to attend to other needs.

Is sending kids home the only choice? How hard can it be to institute a work-study programme? What other strategies can headteachers and parents work through to prevent disrupting learning?
